Basilica of Saint Peter
The grandeur of the seventeenth century facade by Carlo Maderno makes the idea of the gigantic size of St. Peter's Basilica, still one of the largest churches in the world. The dome designed by Michelangelo and a splendid colonnade of 284 Doric columns and eighty-eight pillars of Tivoli travertine surrounds St. Peter's Basilica, as if to welcome in a symbolic embrace the faithful visiting. Thanks to this arrangement, the viewer reaching porphyry discs to the sides of the obelisk sees the columns as composed of a single row of columns.
